Women Suffering from Postpartum PTSD
Research from the University of East Anglia suggests that tens of thousands of women in the UK may be experiencing undiagnosed postpartum PTSD. The condition can arise following a difficult pregnancy or childbirth, with symptoms including flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, and persistent negative thoughts. Recent data reveals that between 2021 and 2023, suicide was the leading cause of death for UK women between six weeks and one year postpartum.
Researchers describe these deaths as just the tip of the iceberg, with many more women suffering from severe mental health issues without access to necessary help. Their study indicates that 1 in 20 postpartum women develops PTSD.
