IBM Unveils Dual-Instruction Set Processor
At Hot Chips 2026, IBM introduced the world's first dual-instruction set processor. With around 70% of global transactions processed via IBM Z mainframes, the new processor integrates the Arm ecosystem to bring next-generation applications to mainframes. Built on a 2nm process node, it features 11 high-performance cores exceeding 5.
7 GHz, an AI inference accelerator for fraud detection, a dedicated on-chip data processing unit for I/O acceleration, and a large cache architecture for demanding enterprise workloads. Rather than utilizing separate Arm and IBM cores, each core natively executes Arm and IBM Z, or Arm and LinuxONE instructions, while maintaining the platform's existing performance, security, encryption, and availability.
